Ever since I can remember, I loved cameras. There was something magical about looking through them at the world around, making the moments freeze forever in time, find angles and perspectives through the intent looking that may have eluded everyone else, but not you, the photographer. One of the appeals of the large format photography is that when you go under the dark cloth the image on the ground glass fills your entire vision, you became isolated from the outer world and yet, very intensely focused on it through the flipped projection. It is one of the most engrossing experiences in the craft of photography and if you have never looked at the large ground glass, I highly recommend to try it at least once 🙂

How old were you when you picked up your first camera?⠀

Those white trunks are a splash of bright in the slowly dwindling autumn days.
I got asked what film I am shooting the most these days and it is @ilfordphoto Delta100. I find that the detail and the contrast of this film is amazing and it is a pleasure to work with. It is not as forgiving as FP4+ and you’ve got to have your exposure game in check, but you’ll get an ultra sharp image with no grain and lots of detail. Really nice for large format. I’ll shoot FP4+ in high contrast scenes, for a more classic and a richer tone, softer look. This image is a 4x5 Delta100 exposure.
.
So what is your go-to film these days and why?

I love autumn not only because of all the colours and cozy things, but because I can sit down and go through all the shots for the past two seasons. The nature is busy in spring and summer and so am I, but come autumn and everything calms a bit down. I will also try to reply to your questions. I’ve got over 200 DMs in my inbox and lots of comments I have missed, so will allocate some time for this too 🍂🙂⠀

It is said that an image is created three times: when you envision what you want to photograph, when you press the realese button and when you do the post work, to bring what you saw in your mind and what the camera saw together. ⠀
This will be one of three limited edition genuine silver gelatine prints that I am working on at the moment. Pretty excited about them :) Are you printing your exposures these days?⠀

The summer is over! I mean, where did it go? And hello my favourite time of the year! Today I woke up to a rather cool morning with that unmistakable autumn crisp in the air. How has your summer been? Mine went by in a whirl, working, travelling, visiting family, tackling different projects, soaking up sunshine and waiting out all the storms that have decided to hit the UK on a weekly basis this summer 🌊💦🌪
This exposure was taken in September last year and for some reason I was putting it off to work on it, but today that autumn air had me all excited about this image.
Check out my stories for the behind the scenes ☺️ Looking forward to hear about your wild summer guys!

The last trip to Scotland was wild, to say the least! Have you ever heard of the highland midge? It was ravenous and it was ubiquitous, even getting through the zippers. And then there was storm and torrential rain getting through your gore-tex in a matter of minutes and then there was this ☝️ the most amazing Highland views and that drama that comes from the everchanging weather. This is Scotland for me, untamed, unpredictable, but always breathtaking, so close to my wild heart 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⠀

The freshly developed negatives are on the scanning table, the old negatives are being rescanned too for something exciting coming, the gear has been CLA’ed and is being packed for upcoming trips and I’m like, yeah, great to spend a weekend preparing for the next adventure after just coming back home from almost four months away 🙌😅 ⠀
So how’s your weekend?⠀

The first film camera I ever bought was this Busch Pressman D, a 4x5 press camera from around 1957. In a very good condition it came straight from Chicago with four filmholders, with markings ”Chicago Police” 😲 There was even a sheet of film in one of the holders, I don’t know if it ever was exposed, but on the other hand may not have wanted to see if it actually was 😅
So this is my first film camera story. What was your first camera?
.
Also, kind of curious to know if you would develop that sheet if you found one in a 60 year old police filmholder?

This was an unpredictable scene, but the kind where you can’t wait to see the negative. The light was all over the place, almost flickering and with 30sec exposure it could be anything. I don’t know about you, but I get really excited about strange light!
And on this I want to also send my big congratulations to @ilfordphoto on their 140th birthday! This was shot on Delta100, hence the contrast, detail and the richness of tone 🎞😍⛰

Filters. They are really important for landscape photography and colour filters are really important for b&w photography. So what colour filters should one choose? Here’s an overview of some standard colours for landscape photography ⛰🎞
• YELLOW - you can use it pretty much all the time when shooting in daylight. It darkens sky to make the clouds stand out and renders foliage in lighter shades. This filter is commonly used to reproduce a correct tone in the scene. It is not a filter for any dramatic effects, I see it more as a tone correction filter. ⠀
• DEEP YELLOW - darkens blues more than standard yellow creating a more contrasty exposure. I see this filter as a moderate contrast enhancer and if you have a lot of blue light you want to correct for. ⠀
• ORANGE - a great contrast filter and an all-around drama enhancer. It will render the skies dark and penetrate through midday haze. It is easy to work with and creates exposures that are visually well-balanced yet dramatic. I just really like this filter. ⠀
• RED - the ultimate bold drama and visual impact filter. Blue skies will become black, parts of the landscape with yellow/orange/red colours will become tones lighter, some almost white. This filter will create the most contrast. It is really fun to use and experiment with. ⠀
•GREEN - an invaluable filter for photographing foliage in B&W. Dark green leaves and tree lines will ususally become dark and lacking volume but a green filter will reproduce them lighter and give a more visually pleasing look with tonal separation. ⠀
• BLUE - not a filter one would usually hear about since it is not so commonly used, but thought I’ll include it here for fun. Think of it as an opposite of yellow - the blue will become lighter and yellows darker. Great to enhance mood in foggy and misty scenes, can create interesting high key exposures with blue skies and create visually interesting tones in scenes with yellow.
⠀
Do you use colour filters for your B&W photography?⠀

Negative scanning. One of the most asked questions and would kind of need a video to show exactly how it is done. But in a nutshell most of the time I do manual “scanning” with a digital camera. My tests show that I can get a drum scanner quality with this technique. For large format negatives I would do several photos per negative, and stitch them in a software. Depending on a resolution I need I can do everything from one exposure to 36, where the latter would give a resolution of up to 1G for a 8x10 negative (which was a benchmark test). Now, being really time consuming, large number of exposures per negative is not something I do often and frankly it is rarely needed. For normal purposes I would just do one to four exposures per negative. This technique works well for me since I’ve already got a digital cameras for work and the only thing I had to invest in was Kaiser copy stand. The digital camera I use is Canon 5DsR and 100mm 1:1 macro lens.
I’ve also got a scanner, Epson V850 Pro. I’m still not sure about my sentiments regarding it. It seems to miss focus with 8x10 negatives and would require some custom built holders. I also suspect it giving me a lower dynamic range than Canon camera and I’ve just got to spend more time with it to see if I can get it to do for me what I want. However since camera scanning works so well for me I just go with it every time.
What is your scanning technique? Flatbed, camera, lab?

One of my favourite shots using a red filter and a stopper. Doubling the filters can give some fantastic results, but needs a bit of practice to calculate the correct exposure. What are your favourite filters to use?⠀

This 8x10 photo has been awarded an Honorable Mention at Monochrome Awards 2018.

On another note, I have been a bit slow with replying to DMs and IG thought it was a good idea to delete all unreplied messages... sorry if I haven’t gotten back to you, if I haven’t replied to your question, please just resend it ☺️

This was probably the fastest 8x10 exposure I ever took. The day turned into fast approaching twilight and we were ready to leave, but then I saw this tree and out the 8x10 goes again. This exposure was made in under 10 minutes, camera set up and all. I thought it was risky to rush it all like that, but sometimes the risks pay of 🙌

Someone has asked me if you need to go somewhere spectacular to find good shots and inspiration or you can find places localy, even if where you live is kind of boring and uninspiring. The reality of it is that epic locations definitely give a more spectacular raw material to work with, but they are not always a must. I live in the Midlands, here it is as flat as it gets, with endless fields and not much else, but a lone tree here and there offers a great opportunity, so do clouds and skies. It has taught me to look and to see a bit better. It is not like you go to Iceland and if you dropped your camera and the shutter went off you’ll still end up with a great photo 😝 However there are so many amazing photographers I admire that can photograph just about anything and make it look and more importantly feel good. I always try to think about them when I think that there is nothing to photograph around. Anyway, what’s it like where you live?
