Cartagena's prime location and status as a major port city has given the city a unique historic narrative. After several pirate attacks throughout the 16th century, the Spanish crown ordered the construction of stone walls to protect the city—the same walls you can see today in the historic area of the city adequately called la ciudad amurallada—“the walled city.” Attacks such as the Raid on Cartagena in 1683 (pictured here) took a toll on the city, but could not stifle Cartagena's vibrant setting and culture that we still enjoy today. #withContext #Cartagena

Those looking for a distinct perspective from which to view Cartagena should consider that of one of its most beloved and illustrious residents, Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Though he spent much of his adult life in Mexico, it was in Cartagena where he got his start as a writer and where he maintained his holiday home. But ‘Gabo’ is just one of Cartagena’s famous residents—surrealist painter Enrique Grau is another honorable mention. On our 2.5-hour Magic and Myths in Cartagena Tour, we’ll discover how Cartagena contributed to the magic of Gabo, Grau, and others as we follow the trails of magical realism throughout the city. #withContext #Cartagena

"Although we have made previous visits to Cartagena, Claudia opened our eyes to historic details we had previously overlooked. We also appreciated her focus on the personal stories of people from all walks of life and how they contributed to the city's character. It was fun to see how well known Claudia is in the city, and to have her introduce us to local gems, such as the Abaco bookstore and cafe. We hope that word gets out about Context tours Cartagena, and that more visitors take advantage of Claudia's knowledge and hospitality," Michael T., on his Introduction to Cartagena Tour. #withContext #Cartagena

Today marks the second Palio di Siena of this year, an internationally famous horse race in Siena's famous Piazza del Campo. The first Palio took place in 1656 and has grown into one of the most beloved Italian events each year. The Contrade of Siena (the districts into which the town is divided) all compete fiercely with each of the 17 districts represented by its own unique colors and coat of arms. This event has been a foundation of Tuscan culture for centuries and demonstrates the region's close ties to its history. #FlashbackFriday #withContext #Tuscany
