Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday is on October, 27th. All week long, we’ll be celebrating his legacy. Our 26th president was an extraordinary man with an incredible vision for our system of public lands and waters. We have much to thank him for.
▪
Together, we’d like to raise a glass in celebration of TR and commit to continuing the work of providing outdoor access and opportunity on public lands and waters for all Americans.
▪
We’re asking you and your fellow sportsmen and women to “Toast T.R.” and donate $5 to BHA today.
▪
Then, take a photo of yourself, friends or family toasting TR with a beer and post it on social media. Use the hashtag #TRbirthday and tag us, @backcountryhunters. Every day we’ll randomly select a participating public land owner and hook them up with a 12-pack of Public Land Owner Pale Ale and a WWTRDO (What Would TR Do?) T-shirt!

And remember, at BHA, after we cheers we drink!
▪
Click the “Toast T.R.” link in our bio to make a donation.

No doubt, part of the allure of our wild public lands is that we’ll never be able to explore all of it. But, we’ll damn sure try.

We hope you find yourself in the quiet timber this weekend.
...
If it weren’t for hunting, I’d likely never be up before the sunrise, hike a few miles, and see moments like this. No trail, no noise, no people. Just clean forest and fresh snow with the possibility of having an encounter with a wild animal.
•
All this because of hunting.

Sometimes you’re the hunter. Very rarely are you the hunted. Story by @mountain_hopper ・・・
Something you never really expect to happen. A mountain lion taken on the ground with a longbow 16 yards away. Being stalked by that same powerful animal.
•
Dusk settled and I found myself still hunting mule deer along this burn edge against ponderosa forest. The sun had set and the only remaining light was that from the purple sunset. A glance over my shoulder revealed a tawny pair of shoulders sink into the grass, framing the delineated head of a mountain lion. A pair of dilated pupils intently focused on me.
•
Reality settled in and I soon remembered I had a lion tag in my pocket.
•
From 22 yards away she lay crouched in the yellow bunch grass. I moved a few steps closer, beginning to feel the palpable shift in predator/prey roles in real time. My shot process took over as she turned broadside to head into the brush. My purple and grey fletching flew wantonly through the one window when my eyes lost sight of it in the low light. No blood, no arrow, but a rattled and restless night.
•
Returning early the next morning I was still unable to find sign of a hit or dead lion. My doubt took over and I decided to try and find a houndsman out chasing critters for that weekend. Thankfully, I ran into @justin_mccabe_ and his fine string of hounds willing to come help take a look. It wasn't long before we found a beautiful tawny cat laying in the grass, only 45 yards from where I had shot her in a patch of New Mexico locust brush.
•
Not a pass through, but both lungs and a touch of heart.
•
She was a young adult lion. Likely 2-3 years of age. She was missing a lower canine and had healed scars on that side of her chin. I figure a hoof strike from prey.
•
It appears that she was stalking me. Though, I do think it was more likely her curiosity.
•
I processed all of the meat and I plan on making a variety of food dishes with all of it.
•
Thanks @justin_mccabe_ and @keatonbingham for helping me recover her.

BHA members continue to impress and inspire those who care about our wild lands and waters.
•
Just consider this recent cleanup project by @backcountryhuntersbc, who worked with local volunteers to fill 50 1-ton capacity bags of trash. The bags were then transported out of the area by helicopter.
•
It’s an absolutely monumental undertaking and they’re not done. With the bags flown out, @backcountryhuntersbc is getting right back to work filling more.
•
Conservation doesn’t just happen. It’s a result of those who are willing to step into the arena and commit to doing the hard work. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

We’re working hard to advance legislation that would dedicate $1.4 billion annually to help state and tribal fish and wildlife management agencies proactively manage at-risk species and prevent them from being added to the federal list of threatened and endangered species.

Ted Koch, traditional bowhunter, retired fish and wildlife biologist with the USFS and BHA board member, explains why the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act matters to all those who hunt, fish and explore public lands and waters.
Join us and urge decision makers to support this legislation by following the Recover America’s Wildlife link in our bio. #recoverwildlife #publiclandowner

It is 80 miles or so by boat down the intensely braided and ever-changing Yukon River to the village of Fort Yukon, Alaska, where BHA Podcast & Blast host Hal Herring meets Walter Peter, a Gwich’in hunter, trapper and fisherman – provider for his family and elders and others, taking meat and fish and whatever else the earth will give, eight miles above the Arctic Circle.
•
You can listen to their conversation in the latest episode as they explore Native concerns over fish and wildlife management, climate change and opening the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge – the birthing ground for the caribou herds on which the Gwich’in have depended for thousands of years – to oil exploration and drilling.
•
Yet they never lose sight of some of the most important elements of life: family, the health of people who live close to the earth, the first bite of the first fat king salmon or whitefronted goose of the season, or the utter deliciousness of moose kidneys bathed in melted caul fat.

Today is Public Lands Day and we’re asking for you to take a stand behind our mission. By making a contribution to BHA you will help fuel the work of our team as we gear up to combat attacks on clean water protections, iconic landscapes like the Boundary Waters and access to our public lands and waters across the U.S. and Canada.
__
Whether you can afford $5 or $500, your generous donation will help us advocate for the policies and programs that ensure conservation of and access to North American lands and waters. To empower BHA members and local volunteers to take on regional conservation issues and stewardship projects. To expand our collegiate outreach efforts to recruit a new generation of outdoorsmen and women who value public lands and waters. To hold those in office accountable for the policy decisions that impact conservation, public access and fish and wildlife habitat.

And that's just a start... Together, we are the voice for our wild public lands, waters and wildlife!

The Louisiana Black Bear, a subspecies of the American Black Bear, lives in the hardwood forests, freshwater and brackish marshes, and bayous of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
•
They’re an example of what wildlife recovery can look like.
•
Pushed to the brink by over exploitation and habitat fragmentation, the bear was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1992.
•
According to Louisiana Fish & Wildlife, nearly 834,000 acres of habitat have been acquired, protected, and/or restored within the bear Habitat Restoration Planning Area. U.S. Fish and Wildlife currently has the bear’s status listed as recovered.
•
The bears aren’t the only species who have benefited from such expansive conservation work. Fish, waterfowl, white-tailed deer, turkey, squirrels, foxes, quail and countless wildlife species share the landscape with these bears and have reaped the benefits of habitat improvement.
•
This is the very reason why we’re so supportive of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act. This legislation would dedicate $1.4 billion annually to help state and tribal fish and wildlife management agencies proactively manage at-risk species.
•
While not all at-risk species are game species, they do share the same habitat with critical game animals. Improving habitat for one animal benefits all of them.
